Who are you?
Jenny Henderson, 2011 Scholar.
Tell us about yourself…
I'm originally from Glasgow and study Maths at St Andrews University.
What internship were you chosen for?
My internship was with Giles Insurance Brokers in London (in Bank i.e. with all the bankers/insurers/brokers!). The project was basically data analysis - we were compiling and analysing data from six associated underwriters. Major accomplishments would be creating a template for continued use with underwriter data, and forging/maintaining positive relationships with underwriters.
What has your Saltire Foundation experience meant to you?
Being given the opportunity to undertake a Saltire Foundation internship is something I still consider to be a privilege. For me, it was a unique chance to meet like-minded young people, finding in them true friends, as well as driven, motivated and focused business men and women. The other Saltire scholars and Global Scots alike are an inspiration to me, and will continue to be for many years to come. This is the only experience I have come across which has truly offered the opportunity for both personal and professional growth.
What's next?
It's hard to say at this time. I got lots of invaluable advice from different people whilst on my internship but a common theme was that people told me not to rush anything and to use the Saltire Foundation network as much as possible.
I'm still not decided on a career path but at the moment I'm applying to Teach First and looking at jobs in Consultancy, but nothing is set in stone.
What is the main benefit of having become a Scholar?
I'm going to find it difficult to choose one main benefit. I know it sounds clichéd but there's no denying that I've developed great confidence from being thrown right in at the deep end and learning about an industry as well as a specific company. Also, learning how to behave in a professional environment and what it's like to be part of the working world (especially in somewhere like London!) have both been invaluable.
Anything else to add?
I would whole heartedly encourage anyone considering applying to go for it. It's not an everyday opportunity, so please don't let it pass you by! If you are lucky enough to be given a placement, make the most of every offer which comes your way while you're interning - I had twelve weeks rather than eight, and I still can't believe how quickly they flew by!
