Kid Entrepreneurs

Spend enough time in Massachusetts and you can't help but run into some kid entrepreneurs...!  Now to old "Wantrapreneurs" like me, I mean the 18-21 year old hot-shots full of passion, brimming with optimism, and with the courage and the creativity to just leap on an entrepreneurial adventure and produce something utterly remarkable.

Well today I met a different sort of kid entrepreneur - real kids young and old - from just a few months old, to the young at heart.  I lined up with about 1,500 of these kid entrepreneurs, all decked out in bright orange T-shirts on a grey and drizzly Boston morning.  Why....??  Each and every one of us had a purpose.  To step up and stroll out with the goal of raising money for the Children's Hospital Boston.

And raise money we did.  At the last count this little Sunday morning event,  raised a staggering $930,000...!!! And we the Saltire fellows, gave a little back to Boston by raising $1,000....Thanks everyone.

But this was much more than raising money.  You could just feel it in the energy around the place.

I met kids who were were raising money with their schools, I met Mum's and Dad's who had a child saved and wanted to give a little back.  And yes, I also met Mums and Dads who had been a little less fortunate and came to remember their loss, celebrate the short life of their loved one and help some of the other little kid Entrepreneurs out there.   Kids like little 3-years old Drew with severe cerebral palsy.  Who sat in her wheel chair for the entire 7-mile route (in the rain), while her brother Eric (7yrs) helped push her along.  Not a single complaint, just a great big smile and a little giggle when Eric pushed her faster....

These kids are the real Entrepreneurs out there.  Courage, optimism, creativity but above all else - the drive and the passion to never ever give up in the face of adversity....

Hey Duff,

Not quite - but I did get her number (never miss a trick on trying to connect).  Believe it or not the bunny is also an entrepreneur...!!

She runs a web-site for kids which uses simple games to teach kids (through online play) the value of empathy, compassion, support and teamwork.

She was a psychologist who found out that when little kids see other little kids in trouble, they instinctively reach out to help.  And it's not a "non profit" the model is pay-per-view with $5 for a months worth of play.  So it's completely self-funding and even manages to give money back to good causes....Knowing how much my own kids like to play the games on CBEEBIES, methinks their could be an opportunity here...So off to a iphone apps networking event tonight to test it out....

It's amazing how many business models there are out there... Enjoy your last six weeks in Boston.  You are certainly trying to make a difference....Jim

Thanks I appreciate that Iain, I'm just gonna read the speech you and Neil were talking about, thanks for pointing it out to us and the Hugh Grant interview.  I would have missed it otherwise.  Stay busy now!!
