In anticipation of our return to Scotland

Whilst flying home from a Veolia Business Development conference in Atlanta, I had a sudden recollection of why I became a Saltire Fellow.

I had intended on using the flight to catch up on sleep.  I had been “networking” into the wee hours the night before (and maybe enjoyed a drink or two).  Sleep was not on the cards, however, as I bought a copy of Inc. magazine in the airport and ended up engrossed for the whole flight.  The magazine is full of stories, personal experiences, tips and guides for starting, forming and growing businesses.  There are some excellent articles in there and I thought I would share some of my favourite quotes.

Excepts from Inc. Magazine (June 2009): For anyone interested, the Inc. website has most of the magazine articles and much more

Whilst working here in the US I think it is easy to forget about why we signed up for the Saltire Fellowship.  With so much to do and experience it is easy to get wrapped up in our current lives.  Martyn said to me this morning “You only get one shot at life.  Make the most of it!” and for me this means thinking and planning for the future.

I am looking forward to our next placements in start-up and early stage companies back in Scotland.  For me, this is what the course is all about and one of the main reasons I signed up to be a Saltire Fellow.

Great post, James - well done on making the flight ;)

I'll be checking out Inc. - like the negotiation point on listening and the Microsoft/Google comparison.

I've now got this image of Martyn and you sitting in Veolia shouting motivating lines at each other, probably high-fiving every few minutes as well.  I love it - the US is working its magic on you!

Ha ha!

Your image is obviously spot on!  We also listen to "eye of the tiger" during our coffee break!
