Our time here in Texas in flying in...it's great fun and the undegrads 'fixin' to come here will love it.....
Our apartment is situated near the top hospitals in the USA for cancer treatment. Consequently, when patients are here for long-term treatment, they and their spouses stay around the area and the Esplannade Apartments are considered ideal for rest. Whilst here, Simon and me have be-friended Jim and Eli. Jim is recovering from the worst kind of leukemia one can get...Philadelphia Strain. Over the last year, they have been through hell and back. Jim is on the mend and now that they are 'pals' with two Scottish rascals, they are having a wee bit more fun.
Jim is a world class magician and has played Vegas etc... He has mezmorised both Simon and me with amazing card tricks. With no dark stages or fancy lighting...just plain old magic....it is breathtaking...
A couple of nights a week, we eat with him and Eli. Because of Jim's recovery drugs etc.., their kids must stay with their parents in Dallas. He cannot be around them as 'kiddy bugs' can seriously affect his progress. This places great strain on the family...
The inspirational thing for Simon and me is this....his continuous optimism! While ill, he has written a screenplay. It's awesome. Could be a hit in the cinemas one day. Entrepreneurial and creativity in bucketloads.
On this journey as Saltire Fellows wi nae money, [hence the reason they are feeding us..], we can get lost in our own minds-eye and put too much emphasis on some things, that in the scheme of things, are not really all that important.
Spending time with Jim and Eli kinda puts things into perspective for us......Truly Inspirational!!
Here is a link to his website....should you wish to see some of the magic we get for free....

Great blog Jimbo - the best yet.
Nothing reaches out to people more than touching the human spirit - certainly helps me stay grounded and in touch with how fragile reality can be at times.
I met the genzyme social responsibility go-get guy yesterday. Now most people think "green" and a few charities...wrong...how about teaching kids to read, giving free medicine where they can, actively encouraging employees to engage in charitable activities to help their communities outside of work...the list goes on and on. That's why they, like so many, gave such great support on the Children's hospital walk the other week.
Here's another inspirational story - and as you say, kind of puts it into perspective...

Folks....Jim Munroe is amazing...let me tell you about the first trick he did for me...
We went for dinner at the apartment, the first time I'd met Jim. I was sitting across from him at the dinner table. After the meal, a new deck of cards appear. Jim begins to shuffle them (which is impressive enough) and in the mean time is asking me whether I beliveve things are planned or random in life. I said random, at whilch point he sits the cards down and asks me to shuffle them. I do my best shuffling then he asks me to sit the cards down and cut them. I do this and discard the other half. I shuffle them again and Jim asks me to count out 10 cards face down. After doing this, Jim picks up the 10 cards and begins to count through them one at a time. AT any point I can say "switch", which will take the top card at the time and put it on the bottom. We do this a few times. Jim asks me to pick up the 10 cards now and lay them out in a row, face up.
Whilst looking at this set of random numbers, he says "so your definatley still a random guy" to which I replied, "yes". He continued, "cool, cause in front of us we have a random 10 digit number that you shuffled, cut, shuffled and switched. Some times when I like at a sequence of ten numbers it reminds me of a phone number"...
And with that, I realised that the random number on the table was my US mobile phone number! I was truly blown away.

Thanks for sharing your story guys. I was moved reading it.
My friend back home just told me her 6yr old daughter has been diagnosed with aplasmic anaemia. Basically she has no immune system and is seriously ill. Why do these things happen to good people....that's for another discussion.
We are all inspired by people who overcome adversity in life because we can all relate to that. Let's just not get caught up too much in our own importance...."do you know who I am" and have some humility, enjoy life and share our successes!

Here! Here! Lesley...Thanks...Jim
