Business woman or people person?

It's so fantastic to be home.  Home in the city I love and more importantly, home to the people I love.  I've been catching up, unpacking, shopping (of course!) and generally finding my feet again back home.  But its the catching up with friends that hs made me write this blog today.  Everyone wants to know how was the last seven months for me; what was the most memorable, what have I learnt about myself, what more do I know about business.......I could list many as I've had the most wonderful experience but what stands out for me is how I relate to other people.

I love meeting new people in life, learning about what makes them tick, what makes them enthusiastic about their family or their work or thier hobby.  There's nothing more interesting that seeing someone passionate about something, it never ceases to intrigue me.

But here's the question.....I've been told on several occassions "you need to be less subjective Lesley; you cannot be a good business woman and care so much about people.....".  This cannot be true.  People are what makes a company; caring for them is what makes a company grow.  Did this great country of Scotland become what it is through individuals caring only for their own gain?  Everywhere I went in the states, people loved to be Scottish.  They always had a great great granny who was Scottish; or some long distant relative.  Why is that so?   Us Scots are known for our friendliness, our humour, our pride... and for me our camaraderie.  I hope to never lose my interest in the people I work with; as a team we'll make a great company, a great business and have fun getting there.

That's a more thrilling journey to undertake don't you think???

Yep... possibly too many ENTJ's can tip the balance in the wrong direction in a team...

Being seen as a team leader who is passionate, has vision, can talk to people on their level and above all genuine, is vital, I would argue, to success.

There are times when we have to be tough for the needs of the business. However, if you communicate why, then the team understand where you are going...

Glad to have you home...Jim

Lesley,

Great blog.  Sir Ian Wood is one of Scotland's most successful entrepreneurs and one of my business heroes.  He presented at an Entrepreneurial Exchange dinner in October 2008.  Take a look at the feedback from attendees on the link below – the dominant theme is people, people, people.

Looking forward to seeing you again in Stirling.  Enjoy the weekend.  Martyn
