I'm proud to know...

I am proud to know a BAFTA winner - I wish I could claim it was a glamorous actress but....  Well, let me start this story at the beginning...

About 5 years ago a designer and photographer had the idea of keeping a daily photo journal and created blipfoto.  Some of his friends liked it and asked him to share the site with them.  Then their friends joined.  Then their friends friends.  Eventually paying for the server as a hobby wasn't viable and an optional paid membership was introduced.  The users bought in in droves.

Today the site has a solid base of paying users, thousands of daily contributors and tens of thousands of daily viewers.  They are currently launching a major photo competition in conjunction with at Channel Four Television, the National Theatre of Scotland and Scottish Screen,

Today they won a BAFTA at the Scottish BAFTAs for Best Web Site.  Richly deserved, and of course announced in true blip style by blipping from the stage during an acceptance speech!.

All year we have heard frm a variety of speakers about the need for ambition in Scotland.  I've met these guys, and they have no shortage of it - they see no reason why a world-beating web 2.0/social media web site can't be run out of a small office in Leith.  Nor do I.

I'm proud to be a user of the site - I've posted 694 entries (nearly 2 years worth) on my journal and I haven't missed a day since I started....  During my Saltire Fellowship year it has been an excellent way of keeping my friends and loved ones in touch with what I've been up to, and it has helped me build a wonderful collection of memories.  It has done my photography a power of good, and blipping has been a daily anchor in an incredibly busy and challenging time.

Congratulations to Joe and the team at blipfoto for winning a BAFTA, and thank you for sharing your site with us!
