It’s a tough world out there at the moment. Especially if you are looking for work and that ever elusive “source of cash.” Don’t believe me – well the statistics speak for themselves: 1-in-5 young people under the age of 25 in the UK unemployed; 1-in-10 of the adult working population of America unemployed; repossessions up, oil prices up and the UK recovery only just starting.
However, the green shoots of life are starting to come through in the economic world. But if you – like me – are pounding the streets day in, day out trying to find your next career move; wondering what your kids are going to be waking up to on Christmas morning (hee haw); and figuring out what items you might sell/pawn next in order to meet that forthcoming finance payment – then let me tell you, it’s a bloody tough world out there…
But all is not doom and gloom (just a reality check) – Or as Duncan Bannatyne told me recently – “we have food, shelter, family and fun - more than many others.” Even during these hard times, there is still opportunity knocking.
Starting January, Tim and Kirsten, founders of The Civic Projects, will begin a 14,000-mile journey across 50 American States in 50 days. Promoting social awareness and service by donating their time at 50 community organizations. Why? Well as the number of unemployed Americans climbs to approximately 15 million and charitable giving declined for the first time in 20 years, non-profit organizations are struggling to meet increased service demands on smaller budgets. It is their hope that sharing the challenges, the rewards and the human story of such a journey will inspire countless other individuals to support their own community organizations during what are undoubtedly unprecedented times.
So as we head into the forthcoming holiday season, spare a thought for others in your community, maybe even take some time to help them out. Even if it is just a few pounds, a few hours of your time, or a few kind words - Every little helps.
