Watson wins, but still no cure for the common cold

It's been a buzz round IBM this week.

As Claire mentioned in her earlier blog, Watson the super computer was being tested on Jeopardy (a US game show) this week.  Watson triumphed over two human competitors Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter.  Jennings tongue in cheek caption beside his final (correct) answer "I for one welcome our new computer overlords" made me think... Watson was built by a team of highly skilled HUMANS!

Engineers, designers, programmers - all leaders within their fields, pushed the boundaries of possible to create a machine that can compete with humans.

As we constantly demand faster, smarter, cheaper technologies that allow us to live in a way my grandparents would never have thought possible, let's just remember that it starts with smart people.

The age of the human is not over just yet!  But as humans haven't come up with a cure for the common cold (particularly the horrid one I've had all week) - I'll throw this one over to Watson.
