Hello everybody,
Firstly I would like to say a big congratulations to all of 2009's interns, you should all be very proud of yourselves (until the 'penny drop' moment, when I guarantee you will be petrified! :p). I would also like to extend my hello and best wishes to all of the fellows, whom it looks like are having a blast in the states at the moment.
So, where do we stand? We have a highly successful 2008 group achieving great results academically and professionally after a life changing trip last summer, a group of extrememely experienced and capable professionals currently immersed in intensive work in their respective fields abroad, and an even larger group of aspiring interns for whom the journey is only just beginning.... So much raw talent!!
I for one am extrememly excited to watch the transformations over the next 6 to 12 months in everybody, and cannot wait to meet all of you once your trips are over to share our experiences.
Slainte!
Hi Iain,
Great to see your blog. What's your situation? were you an intern last year? Excuse my ignorance but us fellows don't know too much about what you guys have been up to. Any chance of you explaining a wee bit about your experience with the Saltire Foundation thus far to help us out? We're really keen to get a feeling for your experiences and how they compare to ours.
Regards
Lesley
Hey Iain
How did you get on in the marketing competition? Just to be nominated is an accolade in itself. Hope all is well now that you have finished at Uni and you are well on your way to finding your dream job.
Keep up the blogging.
Paul
Of course Lesley, I am a 2008 intern, working with SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering in Bellingham, WA. I am a marketing student, so during the applications I specifically wanted a marketing based internship, rather than a merry-go-round one, so I could hit the ground running. I arrived with a colleague (Lorraine Cruickshank) to be set a task of market development for their global contacts, which was a lot of market research and data filtering exercises, but a worthwhile process. It was invaluable to be brought along to boardroom meetings and get down with all the lingo, and also be asked for our opinions and thoughts on certain processes they made. I was also able to pitch in at new media and PR meetings because of the nature of my degree.
It was an incredible experience, and one that I feel I reap the benefits of so much more now that I am back, since it has given me a whole new perspective on things. I attacked my final year with so much energy, I really didn't want to let myself down when I felt I had been built up so much by SF. Things have really paid off for me, since I'm looking good for a 1st class degree (find out in 2 weeks) and as Paul said, I was shortlisted for the Marketing Society's student of the year award. I am delighted to let everyone know that I was announced as winner on Friday night, and it is testament to the SF experience that I felt confident to pursue such an accolade and triumph.
So things are looking really promising for me at the moment, this week has already been really busy and it's barely even Tuesday lunchtime here, my inbox is bulging after getting the award. I will keep everyone posted as to how I get on, I think things are going to move quickly from here.
Best wishes with all your adventures, I'm loving the blogs and with I was coming back out there this summer! Looking forward to getting a round in when you are all back :)
Iain
oops, I mean I wish I was coming back out there this summer!
Hey Iain, thanks for that. Sounds brilliant. I certainly wish there was a programme like the saltire foundation when I was an undergraduate. Before I go on, many congratulations on your award, how wonderful, you should be really proud of yourself!!
I love that you felt your experience with SF has helped you reach for the stars. I don't know you well enough but I bet you reached pretty close to there anyway! I feel the same way. I have high expectations for myself when I come home but I am now much more confident in being able to achieve my dreams. It's a good place to be eh!!
I'm positive you'll get a wonderful job as a result of all your hard work, please keep me posted and yeah, can't wait for a catch up over a few sherbets when home.
Lx
