A burnt lobster reporting from Boston

My first week in Boston has been a rather hectic one! It all began on Saturday, after the flight over, we had a little walk round Cambridge (the area of Boston in which we stay). I was like a zombie from all the travelling!

Our first day in Liberty Mutual was both exciting and daunting. When arriving at the impressive doors of Liberty Mutual I knew we were set for a fantastic summer. We each where brought to our desks, Cat and I are lucky to sit with ten other Actuarial interns, who greeted us both with friendly smiles. Next I met my Manager, Mike and the rest of my team. During the summer I am working in the Commercial Markets specifically in the National Market department.

I had the opportunity to meet an Irish and English actuary which was very interesting. I met with my team and actually got some proper work to get started on. A meeting followed with some of Liberty Mutual’s underwriters, which was very interesting. We also got the opportunity to meet one of the Saltire fellows, which was great he was able to advise of us where to go and it was also nice to hear about his experiences in Boston.

On Thursday night we went out for some drinks after work with the American interns it was good to get to know them a little better and we had fun trying to talk in an American accent, Cat defiantly has the best!

The following day we attended the BBQ that the fellows had organised, some very important people from the foundation were in attendance and we got the opportunity to meet the other fellows. This was a lovely event and the fellows were all so friendly.

Saturday, Cat and I found ourselves taking a boat out to the Boston Harbour Islands. We went with fellow Liberty Mutual workers and helped to get rid of the invasive plants on the island that were preventing the nature habitat from surviving. Five hours later I found myself on the boat back looking like a lobster because I forgot to put sun cream on. Who knows what next week will hold….
