week2 cologne - same place, new project

Hello everyone,

Sooo end of week 2. Have been following everyone else’s blogs, and there is one common thought: “I cant believe its already the end of week 2!” And I totally agree. It’s going by so fast. It feels just like yesterday that I got off that plane and made my first steps into Cologne city.

Work has been extremely interesting this week. Have changed project because my original one was beginning to have a lot of only German-speaking meetings. So there was not much point in me staying there anymore. My new project again involves providing a new business strategy to one of the Bayer companies. My new team are absolute stars. They have been extremely helpful. One of the team is a guy from the UK who’s extremely talented with numbers and has been taking time to explain all the financial analysis behind the strategy. One of my goals over the next 2 months has been to get more comfortable with numerical data. (I’ve been studying classics for the past few years, so it’s been a very long time since I’ve had to work with numbers). I think having a good understanding of basic financial calculations, and being able to analyze and present data is a really key skill in any business – so I’m making every effort to improve myself in this area!

Most of the work has been building and editing PowerPoint slides that will be presented to clients. It sounds easy work, but in fact can take hours on end as you really need to pay attention to detail and make sure everything looks absolutely perfect. One of my other tasks for the week was to design a tool for comparing outsourcing companies, looking at a number of different qualities. If all goes well it should be used by the employees of the company.

Outside of work has been another fantastic week. On Thursday night, the other interns organized for us all to go out for drinks at a really plush rooftop bar in Cologne. Was fantastic as we got an incredible view of the city.

On Sunday we met up with some of the interns and traveled to Düsseldorf, which is only about 30 minutes away. We were very lucky as there was the annual fair this weekend for the region. Basically about a miles worth of carnival type activities along the river Rhine. Managed to try out a few rides and played a few games. Although didn’t manage to win anything - Its funny how you never seem to beat those games…

Hope everyone is well and continuing to have an amazing time.

Rob.

Hi Rob,

Glad to hear all is going well...my brother did a year of his architecture course in Aachen, so I've been to Cologne and Duesseldorf too - both were fab, so I can picture you trying to win teddy bears there ;)

You've got a fantastic opportunity where you are and the project will be key. Having worked in private sector pharma, I know how important those presentations can be...you can't take back a first impression and so you are contributing to the good business reputation of Bayer.

If you need anything, remember there's a SF team back here in Glasgow...only a phone call or email away!

Take care,

Angela

Hi Angela,

Thank you for your post. Well your brothers a lucky guy, because Cologne is a great city!

You could not be more right about first impressions. As well as contributing to the precedented good reputation, I think it helps you gain more trust, which leads to more responsibility and interesting work.

Thankyou I will remember you in Glasgow if I need anything! Hope alls well up there!

Rob.
