So what gets you out of bed and into work everyday...?

Week 3 is almost over and I now feel like I have settled into a working life in Boston. This week has been very busy and I am beginning to get to grasp with all the daily activities in my office. I had the opportunity yesterday to take a tour of the Therapeutic Protein Expression lab. This was very insightful as I had the chance to witness some of the real engineering behind producing world-class pharmaceutical products and gene therapies.

I continue to be regularly impressed by the Genzyme Corporation; the commitment to their patients is astonishing. In every part of Genzyme that I have visited, on the walls are posters of their patients. Included on the poster is a description of the drug/therapy produced by Genzyme that help them survive and sustain a normal life. Ask any of the employees and they will tell you that the posters provide them with motivation and an incentive to strive to always achieve the best as somewhere down the line the work they conduct on a daily basis will have a significant impact on a life.

The Genzyme Corporation is also heavily involved with The Jimmy Fund. The Jimmy Fund supports the fight against cancer in children and adults at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The G.I.V.E program (Genzyme invests in volunteer efforts) has organized a Jimmy Fund car wash at Framingham and later on today most of the interns working in Framingham (including myself) are volunteering to help out.

The weekend is almost here and tomorrow I will take a trip by ferry with the rest of the Saltire group to Cape Cod. The Cape is a huge holiday destination in Massachusetts with beautiful beaches and fishing villages. After a hard week of work I am very much looking forward to some relaxing in the sunshine.
