Standing Alone in the Lone Star State

One of the many key attributes to being effective in business is the ability to remain cool calm and collected when dealing with imperfect situations….

Walking into another management meeting last week, there was an air of defeat in the room.  The previous day, the battle to get our IT project to go live had started to take its first victims.  “Burn-out”, the result of many weeks of long, intense days, had brought about concern over the breadth and depth of user training for the new management software.  This concern had the management team, teetering on the brink of a serious delay…

-Back to basics-
Every decision that we ever make can be boiled down to a Risk Management decision of one form or another.  This is something that I can remember reading in just about every book I have read on the subject. I think that have always thought it would take a very cold and calculating individual to follow this approach to the letter.  However, after witnessing this meeting, I stand corrected!

One mans discipline, to rise above the emotions surrounding such a crisis and continue to analysis the situation pragmatically, was genuinely inspiring.  The over all welfare of the employees was taken into consideration along with the viability of the different options.  Without going into too much detail…. Ultimately the less favored decision was made, to proceed with the go live date, and like another famous Scot’s man, the leader willingly became a martyr for the cause…

Hello Robert,

How you doing? I hope its going great just now! So what is the IT project going to enable? Sounds a great opportunity to get involved in something project managment orientated as work is dominated by projects now. Looking forward to your next blog!

Hello Chris,

You are absolutely correct, it is a brilliant opportunity.

Very succinctly, the project is a finance and work management system for Production services.  So as an intern from last year, I am sure you can imagine it has pretty much taken over the whole office recently.

Hi Robert,

How are things? Do you have any good careers tips to offer the students back home?

Annie

Hello Annie,

I have to keep reminding myself this is not a holiday!

This experience the Saltire Foundation has given me has allowed me to network with some fantastic individuals in business and gain a much better incite into the way things actually work in industry.

I think that as a student I have been given a lot of advice from different people but the one thing to remember is that, yes getting a degree is important, but at the end of the day, for a lot of the time it’s a tick in a box on a job application.  The experience and understanding of real life industry is almost more important.  The time to go out and seek some life experience in the business environment is now!

Looking forward to next year, when this years SaltireFoundation undergraduates come to seeking full time employment the job market may have improved slightly, but it will most definitely be tough.  If there is one thing that we will have over others it is the experience of working in very successful companies and the networks we have built in our time with them.

So for all those students moving into there penultimate year at university, book yourself into a Saltire Foundation information session when they come around, and you will not look back!
