Arkansas: The Final Frontier

Hello blog!

This has been my last week at work and (scarily) last full week in Chicago.  Last Sunday one of the board members hosted a BBQ for the Society staff.  With Gus back from Scotland there were four of us total (Gus, Kristen, Tom and me) but there were also family members including two very cool kids and two mildly crazy but very cute dogs.  A hot sunny day, yummy food, games and ice cream cake made for a really good mix.

At work solicitation letters for the Anniversary Dinner started to make their way back with some very cool auction items attached which had to be recorded and accounted for.   The Kilted Classic Golf Tournament is less than a month away so there was also lots to do for that as well as calls to be made and letters sent.  The week ended with a lovely lunch out on Friday before heading to the Golf Course for a productive meeting on site about the Kilted Classic.

Although work has officially ended, I’m heading back to Chicago next week before flying home so will pop back into the office and get prepared for the Sox baseball game that the society is going to as a fundraiser on the 18th.  Yippeee!!

Making the most of the city last week involved trips to various yummy restaurants, the Oriental Museum, Art Institute, Millennium Park and some very classy tourist stores on Michigan Avenue where a quarter of an hour was spent balancing the merits of purchasing a giant cardboard Barrack Obama (with Superman’s body) against the practicalities of getting him on the plane.  Hmmm….

On Saturday I packed like never before.  Packing was made tricky owing to the amount accumulated over the last two months (have purchased five pairs of shoes, and acquired a straw hat, hockey puck and American flag) and restricted time frame but in the end (with the help of an additional suitcase) it all fit!  We then headed to Cavalia which was described as Cirque du Soliel with horses.  This led me to expectations of horses walking tight ropes but in fact it was very beautiful with horses running around, dancing and being merry whilst their human counterparts took care of the acrobatics side of things.  It was amazing!

On Sunday I boarded a plane to visit my friend and housemate at uni who lives in Littlerock, Arkansas.  It’s hot.  America is such a huge country that moving from state to state is like country to country in Europe so it’s completely different to Chicago.  So far we’ve eaten gelato, played in the sunshine and discovered a cupcake shop-hooray!

As another week hurtles by, I’m becoming really aware that time is short but for now the adventure continues in Arkansas…
