As the Halfway point of my internship has just passed I thought it would be an appropriate time to compare my expectations for the internship with the actualities of working for Liberty Mutual.
In terms of working at Liberty, the Senior Forum which Nicole, Cat, Orla and I had the opportunity to attend last week pretty much sums it up. I cannot imagine any company in the UK putting so much effort into enticing the best of the best to work for them. The event was incredibly well put together. We bonded as a team on the Wednesday night by building bikes for a charitable organization (Big brothers and Big Sisters), and we later got to see the recipients of the bikes with their (Liberty Mutual employed) big brothers and sisters. This alone spoke volumes about the quality of Liberty as a company. On the Thursday we had the privilege of meeting Ted Kelly, Liberty’s CEO. He was an extremely interesting man and spent 50 minutes answering questions from the floor, in doing this he illustrated perfectly why he holds the position he does, He is a very impressive speaker. Later on the Thursday we enjoyed a duck tour of Boston and a fantastic dinner at one of Boston’s many outstanding Italian Restaurants.
On the Friday, we met the recruiters from our areas and the culmination of the event, for some was receiving the offer of employment with Liberty. It was with a tinge of sadness, but to no surprise that I did not get an envelope containing such an opportunity. After all the reason for our being here is to apply what we have learned back in Scotland, something which I am really looking forward to because I have learned a lot.
My experience at the senior forum raised one very important question for me. Who do I want to work for in Scotland that has a similar ethos of integrity, responsibility and doing the right thing to that which exists at Liberty?
Thus far I have not been able to answer the question but I am looking forward to researching the possibilities. Hopefully I can use the experiences which I have had here in Boston, to convince these employers that not only am I right for them, but also that they are right for me.
