I am now just approaching the end of week 6 over here in Dubai. It has been another busy week in the office. I have just been continuing with the work described in last week’s blog, but have been going much deeper into the marketing side of things. Come over here studying mechanical engineering, marking issues are the last thing I thought I would have been involved in. But it has turned out to be something I have really enjoyed and found quite interesting. I think it is defiantly an area of engineering I will seriously consider when I start applying for jobs next year.
Even though I have two weeks left, it is starting to feel like I am on the home straight now, and I can see the finish line. When I first got here I thought that after 8 weeks, I would be ready to go home. But in two weeks time I don’t think this will be the case. Since the week 4, my experience of Dubai has been fantastic. I can now easily find my way around the city, I am used to the intense heat and quite settled in my nice wee routine over here. Even in the office I feel at home, just going in every morning and know what is required of me. It is quite rewarding to know I am part of a project that is very important to the company.
With Ramadan about to start any time within the next day or so, I am aware that the next two weeks could be a very different experience for me. I have heard lots of stories about the effect of Ramadan on the city but I am looking forward to experiencing it for myself. I think it might be quite difficult that it will be frowned upon if I eat or drink during the day. Since I work for a British company, they are quite relaxed about it. But when I am out at the weekend, it is going to be hard going not getting to drink. Over the past few weeks, the heat has been so intense, that if I am out for 5 minutes I am gasping for a drink. But anyway I will know more by next week and it is sure to be a main topic in my blog.
