8 weeks ago, I was TERRIFIED, what would the other interns be like? What will my apartment be like? What will my job entail? Will I be able to do my job or will I struggle? So many questions were swarming my head and the previous weeks up to the internship felt like a daze as I was so busy preparing for my temporary new life in Boston.
Reflecting on this experience in Boston I know I have changed personally and professionally. I have faced challenges inside and outside of the workplace and it has helped me grow as a person a great deal. At Liberty I have been exposed to an industry I have never worked in before, I have been exposed to different areas and have learned a great number of skills that I know I will be able to use in the future.
The most important factor I have learned and I believe is a strong quality that everyone should have is “people skills”. My confidence has grown tremendously and my communication and interpersonal skills have greatly improved and I have learned to understand the importance of “Networking” I have met some truly inspirational leaders at networking events and I strongly believe that these people have gotten as far as they have because they have great people skills. Liberty’s creed is to treat people with dignity and respect and this culture has been enforced greatly in their employees.
I have met some amazing people here at Liberty Mutual and I am going to be so sad leaving my office on Friday. My team has been very welcoming and I have always felt part of the team since day one. Everyone has gone out of their way to assist in anything that they can. I have been exposed to a number of different computer software programs; dealing with customer complaints; the experience of a mock interview and more - I have even had help to name my blogs! I am going to miss all my team so much and I truly hope I have made some friends for life here and I have to promise them when they come to Scotland to be as courteous with them as they have with me!
These eight weeks have flown in and I am so happy that I have had such an amazing opportunity. The question still remains – was it worth it? The answer is simple – yes! Being chosen by the Saltire Foundation is a privilege; I am very lucky to have been chosen and knowing they have invested in us reminds me that next year it will be our turn to give back to them!
