So the 8 weeks will be up on Sunday, even though it only feels like half that amount. Before I left Scotland I had incredibly high expectations of what this summer was going to hold and began to think this whole opportunity sounded too good to be true. But after spending eight weeks doing things I’d never thought I’d do and meeting people I’d never thought I’d meet I’ve come to the conclusion that my earlier expectations weren’t even high enough. This is one of the few times in life where something that sounded too good to be true actually turned out to be even better.
I came here to learn and get experience working on large construction projects and I’ve definitely done that and more. I would rate this summer as one of the, if not the best in my life. The SaltireFoundation always said this would be a once in a life time opportunity and they weren’t lying. I’ve met people this summer that I can guarantee will help shape my future career and play a big part in my professional life. I will always be grateful to the people I have worked with on a daily basis with here. Their willingness to take time out of their day and teach me everything I need to know, and in English, never ceased to amaze me.
The social aspect of these 8 weeks was equally amazing. I went to company BBQ’s, nights out, bowling with the site team, driving 2500Km in less than two days across 3 countries to the most northerly point in Europe, socialising with executive board members, managing directors and project managers and so much more I can’t remember it all. Meeting people from all over the world and seeing how they work, interact and socialise was also a highlight. Experiencing so many different cultures is never a dull event.
Taking part in this placement has unquestionably put me a step above the rest. So for anyone who is reading this and thinking about applying to The SaltireFoundation next year, do it! It may just change your life, it definitely has mine.
Take care,
Dave
P.S. Why has it been sunny all week but as soon as I find out I have to spend my last day outside on site it starts to pour? I didn't know Sweden had a monsoon season. I think someone is having a laugh at my expense, I guess I better get my jacket....
