This summer has been nothing short of a genuine life-changing experience and I will always be grateful to the staff at the Saltire Foundation and at Wood Group for granting me with this amazing and unrivalled opportunity. I have come back to Scotland with a genuine sense of direction and purpose.
Towards the end of my last week in Business Development I had a feedback meeting with my bosses Bill Cochrane and Valerie Mathieu in which I got some great career advice. Bill likened a career to a game of football. When you’re young, impatient and still learning you want to chase the football everywhere, paying no attention to your own position and role within the game. As you progress, what separates the most successful footballers from the amateurs is the ability to not just rush around frantically chasing the ball but to take a step back and actually read what is going to happen within the game.
Before I left for Houston, I felt like the guy who was just chasing the ball frantically. I was ambitious and hungry but had no real sense of direction for my career or future. Now, 2 months later, I feel like I can be the guy who reads the game with the knowledge of how events are going to progress. The fact that I know I want to be working within the oil and gas industry provides me with that extra impetus to work hard in my last year of University, knowing that I have a concrete goal to strive for.
I would like to thank all those people that I worked for at Wood Group who have helped to shape my character without even knowing it. Everyone working within the office provided examples of professional dedication and personal decency that I hope to one day emulate. So thank you to Bill Cochrane, Valerie Mathieu, Maribel Socorro (and of course Eric Barruetta!), John Lee, Derek Blackwood, Anand Chawla, Bobbie Ireland, Charles Ashworth, Josh Cooper, Nathan Yap, Annie Hollinger, Ryan Boots and Mallory Buckner for all of your time and effort.
Thank you to the Saltire team, specifically Melissa Dickson and Nicola Reynolds and to my good friend Craig Taylor, a former Saltire undergrad intern who brought the program to my attention.
And last but not least, how could I forget about my fellow interns? Phil, Nina, Sarah and Rob, I had an amazing summer with you guys. I wish you all the best and hope we stay in touch for years to come! I am sure all of you will go far and get exactly what you want.
