Hi, ok how to start? Well I guess an introduction is needed. My name is Lindsay Flannery and I have just completed my 3rd year of a Business Studies with Chinese Studies degree at the University of Abertay, Dundee and in 2 weeks I will be heading to Shanghai for an 8 week internship with IBM, in their procurement department.
First of all I have to say a huge thank you to the Saltire Foundation for this fantastic opportunity. For weeks now, I've been explaining to people about the internship and watching their jaws drop. It is definitely a once in a lifetime experience and an invaluable opportunity to gain practical work experience with world renowned companies. So thank you!
I've known that I was going to Shanghai for weeks now, but it was only today that it really became a reality for me in my head. I picked up my visa and received my flight details! Even though I'd attended the briefing session and had telephone conversations with Saltire, not to mention the numerous emails flying back and forth with Saltire and IBM, it was only when I was holding the visa and tickets in my hand that I thought, "I'm flying to Shanghai in 14 days. It's real!"
So now I'm doubling my efforts to learn all about Chinese culture and how to make sure I don't offend anyone. I have a bit of a head start as I've been studying modules based on China and its business practices for the past year but putting the information into practice will be quite a bit different. I've also been devouring guide books on Shanghai and so far every one has been different. The city is constantly changing and with the World Expo being held there this year as well, its had a complete face lift! All of which I can't wait to see. I'm looking forward to seeing the skyline change during my stay and to see what's on offer at each of the world region pavilions.
I'm also excited ( and slightly nervous) about starting my placement. I feel that I know quite well what to expect as I've been given lots of information on the department and the functions it carries out. Plus as soon as I decided to apply for the internship, I did a bit of research on what a procurement department does, having only worked with smaller companies before that didn't even have such a department!
Now if I can only decided what clothes to pack that can deal with 90% humidity, then I'll be all set!
All best Lindz, I know you'll have an absolutely amazing time, take plenty of camisoles; they're a beast in the summer perfect for humidity!
have a fabby time, have bookmarked the blog so will check in on you :)
hugs from denver and me :)
Have a wonderful time Lindsay! I know you'll look after yourself over there and soak up all the local knowledge! Your presence will be greatly missed for the 8 weeks but I look forward to welcoming you back and hearing all about your travels!
