Hey y'all,
I thought I'd better update my blog since so much has happened in the last week so this may be a long 1....!! Basically, as my title suggests no-one understands me over here! Its as though I have crash landed on this foreign land where I can speak the language but they have no clue what I'm saying (must be the Glasgow slang) and they look blankly at me as if I were an alien! I have learned a lot from this already though as I am learning that instead of having to repeat myself countless times, I just get my flat mate Steph to translate in her posh Edinburgh accent, which everyone seems to understand! Ha, No I'm just joking! I am actually learning to speak slower and with better English as a result of this and I can even do a good American accent, or so I've been told!
Anyway this hurdle aside, I am actually loving life Stateside! Last weekend, we paid a visit to the wonderful city of Boston and saw some of the sights. We also explored Cambridge (the area around our appartment) but we are continually finding nice places to visit, eat and sunbathe each time we venture down to 'the square'! I am enjoying the American sized portions, maybe too much, which is why I have purchased a pair of running trainers. Hopefully this keeps the waistline in check! Its been great going out running around the bridges and down past the Charles river.
Work has been slow to start as yet. We had a full week of training last week. This was pretty interesting though and has to be thorough as in the Biotechnology industry everything has to be near enough perfect and there is no room for mistakes which is why the training has been so extensive. Last week was mostly Health and Safety training and we got to see some videos about some of Genzymes patients. As the company cater for patients with very rare diseases, they know many of their patients on first name terms which I think is very touching. I really like that this company makes such a difference to these peoples lives. I've met some lovely Genzyme employees also and many other American interns, some of which I will be working alongside. My manager seems really nice so I am looking forward to seeing what I will be doing in the coming weeks.
I share an appartment with Steph, who also works for Genzyme. Allison and Lynne from Liberty Mutual are our lovely neighbours and Colin and Camilla stay a little further away. The six of us 'Saltires' have been getting along great and have spent a few nights together after work. We are all still getting to know each other as well as learning what everyone has been doing in work. I'm sure these friendships will last well beyond this 8 week bonding session!
This weekend was spent with my Gran and her cousin (who are like a double act) as they came to visit. My Gran has been holidaying in New Jersey which is where her cousin lives. I visited her a few weeks ago when I went to New York. Yesterday we drove down to the Cape Cod area and stopped off at many beautiful beaches. Our last stop was at the end of a tiny peninsula off the coast of Massachusetts, called Provincetown. This is also known as the 'gay' capital of America. It was such a gorgeous little village but it really was an eye-opener and was made all the more hilarious as I was with two old-fashioned pensioners who had never seen anything like it in their lives before! This town is well worth a visit though as it has such a quaint setting and is bursting with culture!
Anyway I think I've rambled plenty tonight so I will leave it there... until next time! XOXO
Christine, sounds like you are having the time of your life and learning many things about your future career and yourself!
I am looking forward to reading more about your adventures!
