So a little over a week has passed since I first landed in Hong Kong and so far it has been a non stop experience!
The flight over was pretty standard with no real hiccups, at first I thought a 13 hour flight would be a rather dull affair however the 'view' from within the plane was tremendous! I arrived in Hong Kong with fellow intern George (Gorgeous George to the locals) on Saturday afternoon and we then made our way to the apartment. The flat is grand and bang in the middle of Hong Kong in an area that I can only describe as 'vibrant'!
On Monday my internship began and although I was slightly worse for wear from the previous evening/morning world cup nonsense I was eager to get started! My office is located in Central Plaza a gigantic skyscraper which dominates the HK skyline! Not too shabby I have to say!
My work varied from day to day, I was primarily helping the construction department (deals with the legal side of building projects etc) and the corporate law department. The work fluctuated, at some points during the day it would be quiet and then it would be manic for hours! Primarily I was researching points of law for client's cases, preparing documents for upcoming arbitration cases and researching current clients in order to see how Pinsent Masons could tailor their legal services to suit them best. I also sat in on an arbitration hearing which was very interesting.
On Wednesday George and I visited the Happy Valley racecourse which is right in the centre of Hong Kong which holds up to 55,000 people! Gambling is big business in HK and one spectator (a fellow Scot) informed me that it is not uncommon for the total amount of money placed on one race at the Happy Valley is more than all the money gambled in the UK on Saturday race day. All I can say is good job I got paid on the Friday! haha
Thursday was quite the day! At the end of the afternoon I accompanied a couple of lawyers to Delloite's (A major accountancy firm) for a presentation. This centred on their forensic computer department which analyse computer hard drives in order to find paper trails when employees get 'creative' with the accounts! It was very insightful and afterwards we popped out for a 'couple' of drinks with the Deloitte's group and various people from Pinsent Masons!
On the weekend fellow intern Douglas who is based in China visited for the day! He arrived rather early on the Saturday which took me by surprise as I was still nursing myself back to full fitness after Friday's shenanigans! We popped on the ferry to the other side of the island to take in the Hong Kong skyline, which absolutely blew me away! Then on Saturday night Douglas, George and I headed out for an evening of relaxation with some of my work colleagues! All in all it was a delightful weekend!
I hope everyone is having a great time!
Until next time...................
