We're down to our last two weeks, I know we've all said it but time really has flown by! This past week has been really interesting for me, it was my first chance to work on a team with a few other interns and I got to help with a project close to my heart.
I've now moved into corporate communications and last week I got to work with my fellow interns Anton and John. We were given the task of creating a website for the Wood Group MS 150 team. The MS 150 is a bike ride from Houston to Austin held over two days with the main goal of raising funds and awareness for MS. Wood Group entered their first official team last year and 48 riders raised over $40,000! Mallory in our department mentioned that without a website last year communications between team members was poor and not everyone was kept up-to-date. This year with the website we hope to better the overall experience and attract more riders and volunteers. We worked together searching and comparing other team sites and defining the main goals for our site. I got the chance to present our ideas to the team captains to see if they liked it, and thankfully they did so it was just up to us to create the content and site. Sadly Anton left the department on Friday, so it's up to John and I to finish the project. John has (thankfully) taken on the technical side and I get to do the content. In addition to the MS 150 website I was given the chance to draft several letters to our business units in the hope of attracting new team members. I've found the project really interesting so far, it's been my first chance to develop a website and I appreciate that it is not as easy as it seems. I have several close family friends affected by the disease I really want to do anything I can to help the cause.
The rest of my week involved helping Mallory draft an email and announcements for the new Wood Group charity brand, currently the company uses Team WG but there they've found that because Wood Group isn't mentioned in the title people do no associate the company with the logo. So if anyone reading this can think of a catchy charity name including Wood Group in the title please let me know!
I also got the chance to help Gary out with the new Wood Group website, the company has so many locations and not all at linked so updating the company address book was a challenge. I had to go through the old site information and compare it to the new sharepoint information and verify any irregularities and confirm addresses and phone numbers etc. It involved a lot of time and focus, but we think we finally have all the right information. Tomorrow I'm getting to go down and help with some testing of the new site, which I'm really looking forward to.
This past weekend my fellow interns went skydiving, I instead chose my favourite pastime of shopping! Having watched some of the videos and seen pictures, it's safe to say I'm glad I didn't go. Everyone really enjoyed it, but I'm too scared to get on a rollercoaster never mind jump from 14,000ft but well-done guys you definitely have more courage than me!
I'm really not looking forward to the next week flying by like the others have; I'm not ready to leave yet! We all have so much more shopping to do and so little time to pack it all in. Hopefully we'll make the most of our last days in Houston, we might even make it to Nasa next week!
