The City That Sometimes Sleeps And Sometimes Drinks Irn Bru

2 months ago I was enjoying my final weekend in the city that never sleeps. Now I’m back in the city that sometimes sleeps, sometimes drinks Irn Bru and, most importantly, always makes you feel welcome. I’ve even managed to re-monopolise my old parking space outside my local train station every morning. Life in Glasgow is good.

Settling back into normal life back home (if the final year of an MEng degree is normal) has not been too difficult. Yes, I miss Devil Dogs, skyscrapers and Lab49 but my time away has galvanised me in terms of academic focus and pursuing career development. My main focus these days is on securing myself an industrial placement for the final semester of my degree and I do this with more confidence now thanks to the Saltire Foundation section on my CV.

On a slightly different note, as part of my 5th year Aero engineering studies I am required to undertake a course of study on the subject of entrepreneurship. Think of it as a bit like Spain playing Albion Rovers in a friendly warm up match before the World Cup Final. It is a nice gentle subject which rarely inflicts as much pain as some of the more fearsome tests awaiting the final year Aero student. If I have learned anything from this course it is that trying to teach people how to be entrepreneurial in a class room is very difficult. I can truthfully say, and I’m sure most Saltire interns would agree, that there is simply no substitute for experience and that I probably learned much more about innovation and entrepreneurship in business over the course of my 2 months at Lab49 than I would in many years of lectures and essays. Someone wrote a blog on here recently about how Scottish Unis should do more to give students exposure to real-life work. I couldn’t agree more.

Not that I’m complaining about the entrepreneurship course though, anything which means I don’t have to think about wings with obscure properties in bending and torsion is absolutely fine with me.

That's all from me for now, I hope everyone's enjoying being back!
