If this blog goes badly I blame it on the amount of gorgeous food I’ve been heavily munching, which has made my arms get too chunky meaning I can’t type very well. I’m in Boston with 5 other interns staying in university halls about a ten minute walk from Liberty Mutual where 4 of us are working! I don’t even remember the flight over- I don’t even remember the plane taking off, I had conked out fast asleep before anything happened, last thing I remember is looking at the elderly man beside me tuck himself into his blanket watching the little t.v. screen show the plane on the map of the world. 5 hours later when I woke up he was still tucked into his blanket watching the same screen shot. I was the last to arrive into the halls and had a bit of drama- my university documents showing I was a student were not fully completed so was in limbo over the weekend but all was sorted by Monday thanks to those back in the UK helping me out incredible amounts! We spent the weekend mincing about in the industrial heat, eating industrial sized portions of beautiful food until we’re all too bloated to walk, let alone move, or lift an arm. In Boston common we lazed and I admired everyone’s tiny dogs- on Sunday some man outside one of the 1000000 starbucks had five chihuauas and I actually had a field day, I actually slyly moved across the pavement and he sort of dumped one of them in my hands and it licked my face. I was so happy, I would have taken it there and then but it was in the shade and in the heat we had this weekend I don’t think it would have enjoyed being paraded around by me….i would have been such a proud owner, and joined the tiny dog owner masses. It had such a tiny face! On Sunday Rudi, Mack and I decided to go to a supermarket and get some food for the evenings, so we hopped onto the T-line and managed to find ourselves about a 2 minute walk from where we got on- Boston is a pure walking city we are gradually realizing- there is no need for transport because everything is on your doorstep. Including a CVS on every doorstep. CVS is like life in a shop, everything you’d ever need is in CVS, its incredible. It calls itself a pharmacy but you can buy everything- last night me and Rudi spent an hour just browsing the shelves. My first day of work was on the Monday just gone, us four Liberty Mutual interns strutted into the gorgeous building in our office wear (office wear....so fun) and got taken to an orientation with all the new hires, and plonked ourselves on a table with some recent US university graduates who we constantly see about the halls now....so awkward...jks jks everyone has been amazing to chat to and so interesting- they're all so friendly and just wants to help you out here, its so lovely! We then all got ‘collected’ by our managers and I was taken up to Distribution Management on the 4th floor in the gold lifts……gold!!! Had a bit of a power trip when I found out the other 3 had to take the silver lifts to get to their floors. Introductions throughout the whole department went on and I got shown to my own desk that I share in a cubicle with another intern from the US called Eric. Eric has been an amazing person to share a cubicle with- he’s introduced myself and the other 3 (Stuart, Mack and Rudi) to the other interns within Liberty Mutual, allowing us to fully integrate into the company, and have people that know Boston on a peer to peer level. He also makes me origami flowers….what a gent eh. I have spent the last 3 days working on learning the roles everyone in distribution management has, and its been made an easy learn as my manager has been really helpful in setting up meetings with people so I can really get to know them and what they actually do once its out of a managerial stage. The project I’ll be working on is a Producer (referring to agents and brokers) Relationship Guide, collaborating the tasks and resources that Account Exectives and Managers use when working and negotiating with agents and brokers as representatives of their policyholders, and combine it with the guide that is already produced for the Territory Manager role. On my second day I grabbed a salad to go with onion in it, and touched my eye afterwards, and it started crying (just the one eye). Had to hide a bit after that in case my manager thought I was weeping (just out of one eye) at my desk. I promise I will think of a better blog title next time, just had a massive mind blank. Really, really enjoying myself out here, and I hope everyone else is too! Rhea xxx
