Hey y’all. We are now into our third week of our Wood group internship, for me this is the final week of my rotation in Oracle finance.
Where…
(Prepare yourself for this, shot of espresso/mountain dew/ red bull WILL be needed)
I have been conducting lengthy interviews with the accounts department which consists of 5 distinct roles AP, AR, GL HRMS and PM. They all have a role in the ‘close’ of the accounts at the end of every month. I have developed 5 distinct flowcharts and thorough minute by minute checklists of their every move throughout this closing process. Basically setting myself up to be a very organized stalker in the future…
OR.
To help me analyze their processes and eventually make recommendations about how they can cut down their manual processes.
My career aspirations will probably lead me to the latter.
Despite how boring this may sound to some people, I find it genuinely interesting, trying to get the kind of detail needed for this project is not as simple as asking, ’what happens after that –after that – after that…’. It takes patience, strategic questioning and perseverance. If I don’t gain anything else from this internship I will happily walk away with this important lesson.
Work bit over.
Last week we headed out to watch Houston Dynamo vs. Bolton Wanderers. After visiting the ‘party zone’ we took our seats in the (very dull and lacking any atmosphere) family stand. For the second half, Kraig, Chris and I, snuck round to join the Mexican fans across the stadium, with our frozen Margaritas in hand! We Joined in with the dancing, flag waving and drumming. They had a few belting chants as well, most notably
3. Cumma cumma cumma cumma dynnnamoooooo (to Culture Clubs – Karma Chameleon)
2. Dynamooooooo ,me gusta ‘na na na na…..’ (insert – something Spanish)
And
1. You can shove your Queen and country up your…. Ill leave it there.
I also entered myself in a corporate golf tournament on Friday. By the end of the first hole I was leading the whole tournament with an eagle 3! Sadly a combination of 40 degree heat/thunder storms every 25 minutes/ me being genuinely awful at golf, led me to slowly drop down the leader board to a respectable 35th position…….out of 37 competitors.
This weekend we stayed in Houston to sample its nightlife! Saturday night we headed to Washington Avenue and stumbled into a club where they apparently couldn’t understand our accents… this resulted in a messy mix up between asking for a glass of water and getting a glass of vodka instead…. Not great.
Next week looks just as exciting with a number of pubs ready to be sampled and a trip to San Antonio – albeit during a tropical storm.
