To echo the feeling of many of you, I cannot believe I am entering my fourth week here! Time flies so quickly.
This week, I have been expanding my role in the society as things are getting pretty hectic around here with the amount of events coming up. I am now getting involved in helping organize the Kilted Classic – an annual golf tournament, carried out in kilts with an abundance of whisky and food of course. This will take place the last day of my internship so I am quite excited about getting more involved with this.
We also had a bit of a scare this week when we thought Skerryvore’s visas weren’t going to get pushed through on time, leaving us without our act for the concert but thankfully all seems well!
I’ve also been working on a promotional video for the society and as such I would really like your help fellow Saltires! In order to merge what American-Scots and Scottish Scots thing of Scotland, I want to make a video, which shows both sides: this is where you come in. If anyone could get in touch and let me know what Scotland/being Scottish means to you it’d be such a great help (I know we all thought about it for our interviews!) You can comment on here or go to http://www.facebook.com/chicagoscots?ref=ts#!/chicagoscots and leave a comment.
Out of work this week I have started acting as if I live here, I squeezed so much touristy things in last week that I am a)too skint to do it this week and b)too tired. I’ve therefore been spending my free time going to the ‘movies’, shopping on Michigan Avenue and hanging out at the beach, sadly, with no success on operation come home slightly browner than I came haha!
Claire Johnston (who did my internship two years ago) is visiting Chicago this week as her boyfriend is from here and he is coming back for his brothers wedding. I think Claire and I are going to meet up for a chat and to introduce me to the Fleming family who are very involved in CHICAGO SCOTS.
Finally, I want to mention the crazy weather I’ve experienced here in Chicago. Since I arrived 3 weeks ago I have experienced at least 12 thunderstorms, they are crazy. This month has had the highest amount of rain fall of any July in history I am told! I am getting the blame for bringing this rain with me, and from what I hear it’s sunny in Scotland so I may well have done so.
Sticking with everyone’s inventive and quirky blog titles, my title comes from a rather inventive homeless person’s sign standing in the middle of downtown Chicago, I’ve seen some disturbing ones about but this one did make me smile.
The Amphitheatre at Millenium Park (free concerts/performances every night) and Buckingham Fountain, two of my favourite hangouts here :)
Hi Kirsty,
I did a similar internship with Chicago Scots three years ago - from reading your blogs, it seems we have walked in many of the same footsteps!
I'm glad you're having a great time and really enjoying the city - thunderstorms and all. A good idea for your video blog could be to get hold of a camcorder and head out on the streets - I did a similar thing at Buckingham Fountain and got some great responses.
Keep enjoying your time out there, say hi to Gus and have a Potbelly meatball sub on me.
Cheers
Andy
Hi Andy,
Nice to hear from you, I have heard a lot about you from Jim Bell. I think all of us have basically been following on from your initial project which is quite nice.
The city is great, any recommendations of some 'must dos' ?
Gus says hello back, as does Kristen.
