Starting the "Chain of Events"

Back to the blogs, this week has been yet another busy one in Boston. Alliteration aside, I can’t quite believe it’s been 3 weeks past already and so much has happened. This blog will go in the style of a 3 course meal, inspired by the many great meals we have had so far. Right now is the starter, starting as we mean to go on with the reason why we are all here, the work.

My department has been very busy this week with each person getting stuck into their own personal work, which has left me to concentrate on my internet project. Having met with Erin to discuss the ins and outs of my project, I sat down with several other colleagues to get their perspective on how I should approach it and found each of their advice both interesting and very helpful. I am currently in the process of putting the finishing touches to my Project Initiation Document and then actual content can start to go online. My office mate Alexis has left for her new job and now I am alone in my office. I will miss our chats about The Wire, clubbing and general random nonsense. We had after work drinks with her and the department and it was nice to see everyone outside of the office. A lot of my colleagues have been to the UK too, so conversation naturally leads us to comparing the two countries and of our experiences travelling.

Now for the main course and it certainly did come in the form of an important meal. The other Liberty interns and I had the great opportunity to meet with Helen Sayles, our Global Scot. The nerves were high before we met her and I looked out my best suit (“look the part, be the part” Prop Joe). The actual lunch was fantastic and we got stuck in to talking about all the activities that we have been doing both in and out of work. Helen spoke about positivity and the need for it in Scotland, a view which I myself tried to enforce in my own life after working at Walt Disney World 3 years ago. She is inspiring and is clearly a very respected woman at the company. I look forward to meeting with her at the end of the internship for our final farewell luncheon.

Dessert time and my god have our out of work activities been sweet (that was a truly awful pun). Another beach trip to Manchester left a few of us a little worse for wear in the tan department, with Alex resembling “The Devil” according to Rhea. I on the other hand realized I am rubbish at putting on sun cream having discovered patches all over me, not a good look. Rhea’s 21st birthday took centre stage and we ventured out to Boston’s premier night spot, Tequila Rain (read: Boston’s answer to Campus). An eventful night of dancing, American dudes showing the true meaning of creeping and expensive drinks. We also visited Harvard University. Having seen it in both The Social Network and Legally Blonde (don’t lie, you have all seen it) it was fantastic to be in the same environment that has been shared by some of the world’s most important people. With our intelligence levels reaching an all-time high due to our inspirational surroundings, they were soon dropped dramatically when we were “mind blown” by a double rainbow in a sprinkler system. Harvard under-grads we are not.

The after dinner mints come in the form of looking forward to next week. I have my first ever baseball game with the Red Sox battling the Cleveland Indians (watching, not playing), my cousin Alex coming down from Indiana, the possibility of a trip of Six Flags theme park and an international football game with our Spanish and Mexicans friends in our building and the all-important meeting with regards to my Project Initiation Document.

Just to note, Sean and Alex, my fellow room-mates and Veolia Energy Interns, are doing more than playing ping pong, although at times the bats have to be surgically removed. Despite having taken a 2 week sabbatical from the table, I came back and showed Alex who is boss. Game on lads.

I have also been given a new responsibility within the flat, starting the morning “Chain of Events”. Had it not been for me, I very much doubt any of us would get up in the morning. Despite the sacrifice of waking up early, it does give me the chance to do my best Pauly D from Jersey Shore impression “AWW YEAH WAKE UP YEAH” or something to that extent.

Well that’s all for now. Until next time Saltire Universe…

Stay classy,

Mack
