After a more relaxing weekend this Monday was less of a struggle to waken to. This week at work has just flown right by me. I have been nervous for this week to come, I have been planning the Bingo event for Team Wood Group which is a fund that has been established to allow Wood Group employees across Houston to join together and give back to the community. Team Wood Group will sponsor any activity that encourages a group of Wood Group employees to participate together in an event that raises money for a third-party charity. There were loads of prizes too, a weekend rental car from enterprise, two $100 vouchers for catering, many gift certificates for various restaurants and cafes, four Astros tickets (the local baseball team) and many other great prizes.
It was a great day with over 100 people in attendance, we raised over $2000 for Team Wood Group which is wonderful. It was a really good social event which let me network a little further; it was good to put faces to the names that had been emailing me for weeks now.
Now that it is over I have more time to focus on the other projects that I have been given. The success stories project is taking up more of my time each day as I fully get into it now. I feel I haven’t given it the appropriate attention as at first I was fearful of it but the realisation that it won’t go away by not doing anything is setting in. Although I have tried to get it going but I have come to the realisation of the real world that people don’t get back to you with ease. However I think I was scared off by the many companies, many people and huge array of terminology which all seems to get abbreviated to make it easier apparently…I don’t feel like that personally, well not just now at the end of week 3 who knows it may grow on me in time.
I have however organised the success stories better now, following having a meeting with Valarie and Michael, who were so great at helping after the meeting I finally felt ready to have a go at getting these stories sorted. They gave me great leads access to documents which will help me fantastically in this project. I’m sure that the others interns will appreciate this when they inherit this project in the coming weeks. I have formatted a database of projects based on what part of Wood Group they belong and I have tried my best to find a contact for each of these. I have at least identified a person to contact from each of the companies who will point me in the right direction.
This week it was the Management Gathering it was so busy just short of 100 people there. There were people from a part of the company that goes under Wood Group Kenny there to explain all that its specialty companies do. It was great to understand more and come to the realisation that it’s not just us interns who find it difficult to keep up with what is happening in this huge global entity that is the Wood Group. It was good to do a bit of networking too!
My dad phoned the apartment really early on Wednesday and I still feel really bad for Lizzie, as she had to wake me as she thought it was a fire alarm at first but then answered, the phone in my room was on silent so I thought it was upstairs and rolled over. But my dad is working in Korea at the moment and I haven’t spoken to him in a while, he thought I would be up but it was the one day I was trying to get a lie in. But never mind it was really good to hear from him, and actually find out where in the world he was this time. He is proud that I now understand more about the oil industry now as he has been trying to get me to listen to him about it for all my life, but I’m sure I won’t ever fully understand his job on the rigs as much as he does. I think I’ll stick to the business side.
We haven’t been up to much this week after work, just sitting by the pool and hitting the gym. The weekend provided all the entertainment. We headed to San Antonio for the weekend and met up with the Dallas interns. Friday we went along the river walk and had food and went to a British Bar. On Saturday I went shopping with Kate and sat by the pool at the hotel then picked up the girls from Six Flags and then went to TGI Fridays and headed out to a bar then club in town, it was an interesting night to say the least, defiantly more of a club for the guys. Sunday we went to IHOP for breakfast and then to the Alamo for our little bit of culture. We came home with plenty time for a swim and we all watched a movie, a good relaxing night. Trying to get into the Library at the Alamo - geek at heart.
Sounds like you are having a brilliant time. Make the most of it the weeks will soon disappear and you will be back at uni in no time!!
Nicola, it's great to share in your blogs and to know how much you are enjoying this wonderful opportunity. I'm so proud of my former English pupil and Girls' Brigade star!
Congrats on the successful Team Wood Group event!!!
