Big wheels keep on turnin'

Sometimes these days, it feels like I’ve been in Geneva for years. I have a knowledge of the city that I never managed to acquire in those near my home (as my closest friends will testify!), and working at the bank has really started to feel as though it’s ‘what I do’. Perhaps some of the other interns have similar feelings, but I’m already wondering how easily I’ll slot back into student life in September! That said, it does give you something to aim for, and a reason to drag yourself out of bed for those dreaded 9am lectures. Having sight of the bigger picture is a big incentive to do well in your final year!

My projects at work are still ticking over nicely, and this week I’ve been starting to think about how to present my findings, as well as making sure they’re accurate. It’s a great feeling when all the number crunching, and hours spent scrutinizing your results come together into something tangible.  I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has patiently answered my questions! The last couple of weeks have also given me the chance to learn more about front office, marketing, and CSR in addition to my operations role. As well as allowing me to meet some really interesting people, it’s been great to see how these different areas interlink.

Away from the office, the Ferris wheel by Lac Leman is currently one of the highest silhouettes on the lakeside skyline, and is surrounded by an ever-increasing number of stalls, amusements and the occasional rollercoaster. Wandering through the mix of candyfloss stands, bars and music venues, you’d be forgiven for thinking this was a completely different city from the one I arrived in five weeks ago. Business people in suits gather every night after work to enjoy the lively atmosphere, and everyone in Geneva gives the impression that for the next week or so, this is THE place to be. Yes, the fountain is still pretty spectacular, but these days I find my attention being drawn away from it to watch the giant spinning ride that has appeared. I’ve always been more of a dodgems girl myself.

Last week Geneva celebrated National Day with the rest of Switzerland. Throughout the day, people gathered in one of the main parks to sample local food and drink, with a huge bonfire and fireworks continuing the celebrations into the evening. There seem to have been a lot of firework displays lately; on Thursday, the start of the Fête was marked by a short display over the Lake.  It definitely put the usual bonfire night displays back home into perspective, and apparently that was just the precursor for the main display next Saturday. If that’s the case, roll on next weekend!

Until next time,

Bisous,

Anna
