How to get keen businessmen/women out of a networking event…

The weekend went past very quickly, it was a relaxing weekend that included; taking the guys to the airport so they could enjoy Vegas, sitting by the pool, going to the cinema, horse riding at Cyprus Trails and shopping. All of which provided some surprises. The ride home almost involved a few car accidents, with cars forgetting to check their blind spot, almost getting burnt in this heat wave, tears at the cinema (we went to see One Day), realizing that the horse I was given likes to kick other horses and suddenly realizing the slyness of my brother asking for an Ice Hockey shirt…EXPENSIVE!

This week at work has been exciting as I have been focusing on the Global Strategic Business Plan which has been a good challenge to complete, it’s almost there now. I have been in contact with many people about it which has been a great aspect of the project as I like to hear different peoples perspectives of working here, their accent and obviously about the project I am working on. I have been reading lots of documents about the area of business and I will soon be an expert on it all.

My previous project, researching shale gas has been a great aid the current Global Strategic Business Plan especially since I have been told I have done an excellent job on it. You could say I am pretty pleased with myself about it.

In some down time I had at work I have also developed a printing guide for the new printing system, which was a fun little project letting me document the processes. And helped Anand out with some research work.

I have talked a lot with Anand this week, it mainly started because he has been giving us quizzes about Wood Group history, Texas and facts about employees. I am really grateful for his time, he always makes time to help you out. Which I defiantly was happy to get at the start of the week as I sat a little confused about my project. We talked about what I want to do after I graduate, which yes I still don’t really know.

This week after work we went to the yard house for Happy Hour with people from work, including a previous Saltire Wood Group Intern Nina who was really friendly and has invited us out next week. It was good to get to speak to people from work that I didn’t know that well and have build up some friendships.

Valerie had organized that the Wood Group PSN interns would help out at the British Americas Business Council with name badges and the likes. This was a fantastic event with a great networking session. There were so many wonderful people there, and I managed to build up the pile of business cards further. At this event I realized the importance of the shale research I had done a great job on, with competitor companies there I did get offered a bribe for my information… Don’t worry Wood Group PSN I didn’t tell them too much. It was at the BABC event that I realized the effort it takes to get keen business people and network addicts out of the hotel venue:

Stage 1 – remove food

Stage 2 – remove drinks

Stage 3 – clean up tables

Stage 4 – put lights on full

Stage 5 – take any glasses sitting on the tables even if still drink in them
Stage 6 – move out furniture

Stage 7 – move in furniture needed for another event

Stage 8 – surround attendees with furniture to see if they get the hint yet
