Programme content and timetable
The diagram below shows the elements of the programme design and information relating to each is described below.

Kick-Off
The Fellows will first get together as a group during a two day kick-off in Scotland. The kick-off will be an opportunity for the Fellows to meet each other, meet some of the Babson faculty and have many of their questions answered about what to expect from their Fellowship experience. Babson faculty will lead the Fellows through some initial classroom education during the kick-off.
Pre-work
Each Fellow will perform an evaluation of a Scottish entrepreneurial company. The Fellow will identify the company's business model, competitive advantages, sales and marketing approach and human capital strategy. This executive summary will be the basis for work done throughout the on-campus module of the fellowship.
For Fellows that do not have a background or formal education in Accounting or Finance, self-paced Finance pre-work will be made available. The Finance pre-work will cover how to read and interpret financial statements.
Learning Experience #1
This is the core four month on-campus learning experience. Fellows will live on-campus at the Babson Executive Conference Center and will attend classes led by Babson faculty. Topics covered will include:
- Building Foundations of Business Acumen
- Building Entrepreneurial Competencies
- Building Sales and Marketing Competencies
- An Intensive Career Planning Workshop
- Sales and Marketing Management
- Entrepreneurial Leadership
- Preparing for Externships
Fellows will have the opportunity to interact with and learn from entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and other practitioners through site visits, panel discussions and networking. Fellows will also have many opportunities to interact with Babson faculty and students.
Externship A
During this three month externship, small teams of 2-4 Fellows will be matched with a world class company. Each team of Fellows will be sponsored by a GlobalScot, ensuring they will have the necessary support within their host company.
Each team of Fellows will complete a strategic, commercially-oriented project for their host company. Fellows will be exposed to key parts of their host company's business, key company executives and be able to apply what they learned during Learning Experience #1 in completing the project.
Learning Experience #2
This two-week learning experience will take place in Scotland and will be led by Babson faculty. This is an opportunity for Fellows to share experiences and learnings from the previous externship and for each Fellow to begin mobilizing their plans for their post-Fellowship career. Classroom sessions will focus on advanced capabilities in building and operating a high growth, entrepreneurial venture.
Externship B
During this three month externship Fellows will be matched with companies that meet their profile for post-Fellowship careers. This is an individual externship, where each Fellow will be placed in a position within a high growth, entrepreneurial company (potentially Scottish) and have key management responsibilities. Fellows will be placed in key positions such as sales, marketing, product development, and operations.
Fellows will continue to mobilize their plans for their post-Fellowship careers.
Learning Experience #3 and Graduation
Fellows will return to Babson College for a final week of learning and for Saltire Fellowship graduation. The final week will be a consolidation of learnings from throughout the Fellowship.
Network Building
Throughout the programme, emphasis will be placed on the importance of networking for future career planning. Fellows will be presented with a variety of networking opportunities, relevant to their future career and they will be actively encouraged to create their own networking opportunities, allowing them to be matched with relevant opportunities in Scotland on completion of their fellowship.
Career Planning / Placement
The diagram below illustrates the steps (and roles/responsibilities) involved in achieving the programme goal of matching candidates with businesses in Scotland that have the potential to succeed and impact on Scotland’s commercial performance.
